Tigray insurgents in Ethiopia seize the Unesco world historic town of Lalibela.

The town of Lalibela, a Unesco world heritage site in Ethiopia’s neighbouring Amhara region, has been taken over by rebels from Ethiopia’s northern Tigray province. Lalibela, with its rock-hewn churches from the 13th century, is a sacred site for millions of Orthodox Christians. Local officials told the BBC that residents had been fleeing the rebel advance.
