Afghanistan’s Female Footballers Make Tearful Calls For Help

In the frantic phone calls and voice messages, Khalida Popal can hear painful and tearful requests for help. After the Taliban regained control of the country after two decades of sweeping the country, the female football players of the Afghan women’s national team that Popal helped build now fear their lives. When they called, all Popal could do was advise them to flee their homes, escape from neighbors who knew them as pioneers, and try to erase their history, especially the anti-Taliban militants who are now rebuilding the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan.
